The Kinks North London Walking Tour
Explore the fascinating story of one of Britain’s most influential bands on this walking tour through the heart of Kinks country in North London. Beginning at East Finchley Tube Station, you’ll follow in the footsteps of Ray and Dave Davies, uncovering the personal history and musical evolution of The Kinks.
First, visit the the homes Ray Davies shared with his first wife, Rasa—first as newlyweds, then in a larger house as fame brought success. These stops offer insight into Ray’s creative highs and emotional lows, including the breakdown he suffered after the couple’s separation.
Continue to the family home where the Davies brothers grew up with their large, boisterous family. Just across the street is the pub where their father was a regular and where The Kinks played their very first gig—a legendary moment in British rock history. Nearby is another favourite local pub, a former hangout for the band and a perfect place to reflect on their formative years.
Outside Fortismere School, once known as William Grimshaw School, hear tales of the teenage Ray, Dave, and bassist Pete Quaife. You’ll also learn about Rod Stewart’s brief connection with the band during this time.
Further along, we stop at the site of a once-famous dancehall that inspired the hit song Come Dancing, then pass a chilling location linked to serial killer Dennis Nilsen—adding an eerie twist to the tour.
Visit the former home of one of the Davies sisters, whose relationship caused a local scandal and inspired some of Dave’s spiritual and psychedelic experiences. You’ll also hear the infamous story of the on-stage fight where drummer Mick Avory knocked Dave out with a drum pedal.
The tour ends with a short bus ride to the iconic Konk Studios, still active today and occasionally visited by Ray himself. Return via Hornsey or Turnpike Lane Station.
